The Bierzo region is located in north-western León, Castilla y León, covering around 3,000 km² across 23 municipalities, with vineyards planted between 450 and 1,000 m elevation.
Climate & Soils
Bierzo enjoys a unique microclimate, mountain shelter from Atlantic and continental influences, with approximately 700 mm annual rainfall, 12 °C average temperature, mild summers around 23 °C, and over 2,100 hours of sunshine .
Soils vary from clay-limestone valleys to slate and quartzite slopes, acidic and well-draining.
Grape Varieties
The flagship grape is Mencía, which covers nearly 70% of vineyards, producing red wines that strike a balance between fresh fruit and mineral complexity.
Key white varieties include Godello, Doña Blanca, Palomino, and Malvasía
Wine Styles
Mencía yields wines ranging from youthful, fruit-forward styles with gentle tannins to more structured, age-worthy expressions with noticeable minerality. Godello whites are stylish and fresh, while rosés display onion-skinned hues with refined fruit and floral notes.
